Puppy & Me Class
If you are worried that your puppy may be too young for class then please read this Position Statement. According to Veterinary Behavioursts, a puppy's lack of exposure to people, dogs, places, sounds, etc could be just as detrimental as having a bad experience. Putting your
puppy through class is the single most important thing you can do to help prevent behaviour problems from developing. Puppy classes take advantage of your puppy's early socialization window and help your puppy become comfortable with routine
handling and veterinary exams. This is the most influential learning period of
your puppy's life! Classes are held in a safe, controlled and sanitized environment. Register and raise a friendly dog.
Although training is not the main focus of Puppy & Me Class (they are for safe socialization, positive exposure, problem prevention and guidance for you), training introduction will include:
~teaching a reward based marker signal
~getting your puppy’s attention (the name game)
~teaching your puppy to target (the foundation for teaching many behaviours)
~sit
~down
~come
~leave it
~drop it
~loose leash walking
~go to your place
Problem Prevention Topics:
~crate training
~house training
~jumping / polite greetings
~socialization
~enrichment ideas
~sound desensitization
~handling, grooming and dental care
~preventing separation anxiety
~play biting/nipping
~preventing resource guarding
Requirements:
~for puppies up to 20 weeks old
~healthy puppies in class only
~must have owned puppy for at least 10 days prior to class
~proof of at least one distemper-parvo vaccine (veterinary administered) at least 10 days prior to class
~bordatella/kennel cough, given at least 4 days prior to class
~parasite control
~negative fecal analysis
Puppy & Me Class will focus on building your puppy's confidence, communication and social skills. A positive approach and positive reinforcement is essential for developing a happy and well-mannered dog. Not only are these classes essential to your puppy's mental health, they are FUN! All household members may attend, space permitting.
Costs $200. This includes 5 (one hour) classes and a training manual.
Location: Puppy & Me Class is currently held at 31 North Lake Road in Richmond Hill, Ont. Class is held each Sunday from 4 to 5pm.
